Service Learning

My service learning was a not really anything new to me but it was nice to finally work with some one who was willing to participate in what activities I had for them. My students name was Mike Stennis and is going to be a freshmen at Central High. His dream career is to be and actor.

The very first day my partner Ebony and I got a chance to get to know Mike and his personality was just great. We couldn't have asked for a better student. We worked on a collage with mike and right away he knew what photos and things he wanted on it. He had so many different ideas I thought we weren't going to be able to keep up. But in the end the poster came out looking just wonderful.

For the PowerPoint assignment, we gave him so much information on his career that he didn't how to take all of it. We gave him all the info we could on acting and he was just thrilled to know there are places out in the country where acting is supported very strongly.

The essay was so much fun. We had so much info that we couldn't figure out how to put it all in. so we grouped together all the ideas that sounded similar and created the outline. And I left the essay writing up to him on his own so he could show us that he can handle these assignments on his own.

the action plan assignment was pretty simple since he had all ready finished middle school all he needed was his high school career. Now Central is not the school he wants to go to but he still planned his career. And he ow knows what he will need to move on and get accepted into LSU.

The fact that Mike was so dedicated to acting was what motivated me to help him. It was a little challenging at first because we needed him to get out of the box and when he did he let his true self shine. I learned that people can be very dedicated to their dreams and will not let anyone or anything stand in their way, I realized this when he told me that he will try as hard as he can to accomplish his dreams. This has made a positive impact on me because even for someone like mike who has been through a lot of criticism he can still hold his head high and not let anyone put him down. It taught me to believe in yourself and not let people bring you down.
